Welcome to the August edition of E-news! July was highlighted by our Independence Day celebrations around Poland. We really appreciate everyone's attendance and want to thank our sponsors once again for helping to make America's birthday a memorable occasion. I received a number of compliments on our food selection this year which is a real tribute to our sponsors. Special recognition this month needs to go to the participants, survivors, and the whole Polish nation on the sixty-second anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw uprising. Truly one of the most remarkable displays of courage in history...

I sent letters to Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Ludwik Dorn and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anna Fotyga to express appreciation for the Polish Government's assistance in evacuating four American citizens from Lebanon. The Americans, who were accompanying Polish family members, arrived on Polish military flights during the early morning hours of July 19. As of July 26 over 14,000 American citizens have been transported out of Lebanon by the United States. Secretary Rice recently visited Beirut and has expressed her desire for "concrete steps that would allow a free, independent and democratic Lebanon to exercise effective control over all of its territory." Secretary Rice pledged 30 million dollars in immediate humanitarian assistance to the victims of the conflict in Lebanon.
I want to mention that a new office will be opening at our Embassy this month. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency will be opening an office here to cooperate with Polish authorities to bring criminals to justice. We all know that drug smugglers do not recognize borders and so we have to cooperate with our foreign colleagues in law enforcement to track and punish them.
Note the piece below on the “Western Piknik” in Wolin, Poland. I think my friends in Tennessee would be surprised how popular country music is here in Poland. We, of course, are doing our part to share some of that rich American culture and I am proud to say that we had a concert from Tennessee’s own Tom Shepherd in my backyard last month thanks to Warsaw’s Defense Attaché office.
I draw your attention to two significant visits we had last month from Warren Miller and Thomas Blatt. These visits are testament to the ongoing push for tolerance and acceptance of faiths and peoples on behalf of both our and the Polish governments.
As always, keep in touch with our goings on at our website http://warsaw.usembassy.gov/ and if you think anyone you know would be interested in our newsletter please do not hesitate to forward it to them so they can register.

  DEA To Open Warsaw Office

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will open an office at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw in August. The office will be tasked with cooperation with Polish authorities to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. Cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies is essential to the DEA mission because the trafficking syndicates responsible for the drug trade inside the United States do not operate solely within its borders. The DEA has over 50 offices in foreign countries.
