Happy holidays from Warsaw!

President Bush has recently announced in Estonia that he intends to ask Congress for modifications to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) that would strengthen the security of VWP travel and allow the U.S. to accelerate the entry of new countries into the program. The issue of visa-free travel to the United States has been a top issue in Poland. I hope you will take a moment to read the information on this important matter provided below.

Ambassador Victor Ashe

I was pleased to join Polish President Lech Kaczynski and Mrs. Maria Kaczynska, Minister of Defense Radek Sikorski and Polish military leaders this past month for the arrival of the first Polish F-16s from Fort Worth, Texas. The arrival of these F-16s marks another milestone in the long and vibrant Polish-American partnership and yet another chapter in our mutual effort to defend democracy.

We here at the Embassy have been closely following the recent local government elections in Poland. As a former mayor I appreciate the importance of local government. Congratulations to all local winners throughout Poland on their election. By the end of this year, I will have made 108 visits to cities and towns across the country in 2006 and I always make a point of meeting with mayors to learn about their issues. This is only the second time in Poland’s history that mayors have been directly elected by the voters of each city. The first woman ever to serve as Mayor of Warsaw was elected. She is Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.

We recently hosted a visit by former Undersecretary of State Marc Grossman as he works on a project titled “The Embassy of the Future,” and look forward to hosting former U.S. Ambassador to Poland Nick Rey as he attends an upcoming conference sponsored by the Lech Walesa Foundation.

We have started a Kids Page on our website to reach the youth of Poland. Check it out at: www.usinfo.pl/kids

Joan and I, and the entire Embassy staff, wish you and your family a joyful holiday season and a wonderful 2007.

Sincerely yours,
Victor Ashe
